Edmunds Scientific owes its origins to a need that an amateur photographer experienced in 1942. Norman W. Edmund used an order-by-mail advertisement in a bid to get a particular lens that he wanted to use in his photography. Getting that lens proved more elusive that he had expected and this inspired him to advertise his own specialty lenses that he had on offer in a photography magazine. The lenses were ordered promptly, marking the beginning of Edmund Salvage Company.

Following great success after the second world war, Edmund Salvage Company moved to Barrinton in New Jersey. The company expanded from just offering optics to cover a wide range of interesting scientific products. The company has helped to shape history as its products have been used in major undertakings. For example, its lens was used in the first color TV camera that recorded the landing of the Apollo on the moon. Edmund Scientific designed the Astroscan Telescope, an affordable compact telescope that won the 1976 Industrial Design Award.
