The College: The V.L.B Janakiammal College of Arts & Science, established in the yea 1992 with its motto “Knowledge is Power”, is committed to the pursuit of Academic Excellence. Within a short span of 12 years, it has distinguished itself under the able guidance and administration of our Correspondent Dr. (Mrs.) V.L.B Janakiammal, in its chosen areas of academic disciplines. It is situated in close proximity to the Texcity of Coimbatore at Kovaipudur, at the sixth kilometer on the National Highway leading to Palakkad. It is duly affiliated to the Bharathiyar University and recognized by the UGC and AICTE. Our Vision: The institution’s physical, human and financial resources would be expanded to accommodate its anticipated growth. It would become a viable partner with the industry to achieve the required quality in education and inculcate the total quality culture in the mind of its teachers and students and ensure their employability. Narasimhaswami is a renowned Mathematics-Scholar with 35 years of teaching-cum-administrative experience. Thanks to his human relations approach to running of the College, the bold turnaround policy vigorously being followed for the past six years for achieving the redefined mission and goal of the institution has gathered great momentum now. Director of Studies: Dr. B. Varadarajan, the former Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce, Annamalai University, with more than four decades of academic, research and administrative experience, guiding both the members of the faculties and the students community to achieve excellence in their pursuit of teaching-learning, is a role model for both. Senior Professor of Management: Dr. P. Muthusamy, who was formerly the Director of School of Management of Bharathiyar University is a well known scholar with over three decades of teaching and research experience and is guiding the members of the staff and students of the M.B.A Programme. He is also in charge of the Research and Development Cell of the College. Profile of Faculties: Computer Science Department: The Department of Computer Science is headed by Mr. P. Balamurugan, who has more than nine years of teaching experience. It is having a full-fledged team of members of the staff with a flare for learning and adopting all innovations in the IT field. It is also grooming Research Scholars for M. Phil. Degree. The Department has four well-equipped laboratories with latest hardware and software facilities. Department of Computer Applications: The Department of Computer Applications headed by Ms. R. Bhuvaneswari with more than 11 years of teaching and administrative experience, is fully geared to meet the demands of the students seeking pastures in the field of Information Technology. It has a futuristic approach in imparting education and training the students. Department of Software Systems: The Department of Software Systems offering the 5 year Integrated Course leading to M. Sc. Degree is headed by Mr. M. Jegan with six years of experience in teaching. It has a duly qualified and experienced team of faculty members. The well-equipped Laboratory prepares the students to learn the intricacies of software development and themselves to innovations. Computer Laboratory: The Computer Science Laboratory is one of the best in the city with latest hardware and software and is equipped with 300 terminals and workstations in multi-operating system environment for students to gain access in the latest 0S/400 (of AS/400), 0S/2 warp, Windows 2000, Netware, Linux, LAN, UNIX and multimedia environments. The labs are also equipped with all the latest teaching aids in terms of Overhead Projectors, Slide Projectors, and LCD Panels etc. for effective teaching and learning purposes. The availability of the latest software such as Oracle, Sybase, Visual Basic, Power Builder, Visual C++, Java 3D Studio Max, Auto Cad, Virtual Engineer, FoxPro, Macro Assembler, MS – Office, Turbo Pascal, Windows etc., is one of the prominent features of the Computer Lab. Department of Business Management: Centre for Management Education Research and Development: The Department is headed by Mr. C. Ramakrishna who has 30 years of industrial and teaching experience to shape the destinies of future managers of business. The team of the members of the faculty is also a blend of field and academic expertise. Besides class room lectures, importance is given to Group Discussions, Seminars, Analysis Sessions, Case Studies and Industrial and Trade Fair Visits. The sole aim is to develop the all-round personality of students. The Department has distinguished itself through its association with the industries for making the teaching – learning process more effective and needed based. It is also preparing Research Scholars for M. Phil. And PhD Degrees. Department of Catering Science & Hotel Management: This Department headed by Mr. Ajeet Kumar Lal Mohan, who has 15 years interaction with the hospitality industry and teaching experience, is having a full-fledged team of qualified and experienced staff to handle the theory and practical classes. The infrastructure facilities have been provided with a class if ambience and high standard equipments. The department has a perfect restaurant with an attached mock bar. The basic training kitchen, the quantity kitchen and bakery are well equipped. The Front Office, House keeping and the Restaurant are air-conditioned and furnished to Five Star standards. It has got and enviable record of 100% placements of its outgoing students year after year. Leading hotels in India like Taj Group of Hotels, ITC Welcome Group, Park Sheraton & Towers, Ambassador Pallava, The Residency, and Mahindra Club Holidays are the few hotels which come to our campus regularly for campus recruitment. Department of Electronics: With the adequate infrastructure provided and a modern laboratory, this Department has set highest standards in training the students. It is headed by Mr. K. Vasudevan, who has 13 years of experience in the field of Electronics. He is duly assisted by a team of well qualified and experienced faculty members. The Department offers B. Sc. (Electronics) and M. Sc. (Applied Electronics) courses. The students of this Department have great chance to enter the computer field as Hardware Professionals. The UG course also has a wide scope for other PG courses like M. Sc. (Applied Electronics), M.C.A, M. Sc., (Computer Science), M. Sc., (Computer Technology) and M.B.A. The application based course in Electronics helps the students to acquire vast knowledge in designing. The electronic lab is well equipped with the latest and most modern equipments. Every student has to undergo industrial training and also carry out a Project during the final semester of the course. The department has arrangements for carrying out such projects in leading industrial houses. Department of Commerce: The Department headed by Mr. Sethupathi with 7 years of experience has a team of experienced hands with the needed industrial exposure to train the students entrusted to its care in the new era of globalised economy and revolution in information technology. It periodically conducts seminars and arranges guest lectures to update the knowledge of students. The Career Guidance and Counseling Cell is also functioning in the Department to guide the outgoing students in their career ambitions. Besides, they are given training to handle latest accounting software like Tally, Ex and others. It is offering both the conventional and Computer Application Oriented Programmes. It is also recognized by the Bharathiyar University for guiding research leading to M. Phil. And PhD Degrees Department of Commerce with Computer Applications: The Department of Commerce with Computer Applications offering the latest UG Programme in Commerce is headed by Mr. C. R. Mageshwar with 12 years of experience. It has also duly qualified and experienced team of faculty members. The well-equipped Computer Laboratory and Free Internet facility enable the students joining the course to learn the intricacies of E-Commerce, besides acquiring the basic skills relating to Commerce. Department of Corporate Secretaryship: The Department of Corporate Secretaryship offering the latest UG programme in Corporate Secretaryship is headed by Mr. Thiagu with 13 years of experience. It has a full-fledged team of experienced members of the faculty. Department of International Business: The Department of International Business offering the PG Course leading to M.I.B Degree is headed by Dr. B. Varadarajan with over four decades of teaching and research experience at Annamalai University. It has a separate well-equipped Computer Laboratory to enable the students to master the Computer Applications in International Business. Duly experienced and qualified members of the faculty handle the classed. The alumni of this Department have secured University ranks repeatedly. They are all gainfully employed. Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences Departments: These departments are having a full strength of experienced staff members with research qualifications. They are making the necessary inputs as per the requirements of the Bharathiyar University for the UG and PG programmes at a very high standard to enhance the overall performance of the students. Research Scholars are working in these Departments for their M. Phil. and PhD Degrees. Research Programmes: M. Phil. and PhD Programmes are offered in Commerce, Mathematics, Tamil, English, Computer Science and Management disciplines. The College has also plans to offer career oriented certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programmes to enable the students to acquire additional skill and knowledge in their area of interest. The College has over 1900 students and more than 100 members of faculties with adequate supporting staff for laboratories, departments and office. Research and Development Cell: A separate cell to co-ordinate the research and development activities of various faculties is working under the guidance of Dr. P. Muthusamy, who has more than 3 decades of teaching and research experience at Bharathiyar University. A number of research projects on various topics have been identified by this cell for execution. Institution – Industry Interaction: The institution is having effective linkage with industries and more than 200 industrial establishments are providing facilities for students to take up their internship and summer training. Besides, the institution has a MOU with Roots Group of Industries, Coimbatore, for carrying out research projects in the fields of Management and Catering Science. Skill Exchange programme is also under implementation for the mutual benefit. Library: To provide access to global knowledge, the College has libraries separately for UG and PG students functioning on all working days from 9 am to 7 pm. They have a collection of more than 20,000 volumes of Indian and foreign books in their latest editions besides 150 national and international journals of educative and research value. Digital Library: To cope up with the modern trend in the development of digital technology, a CD Library has been equipped with 10 computers connected to INTERNET environments and a number of CDs on various topics such as CBTs, Encyclopedia, Personality Development etc., are available. Besides, internet and E-mail facilities are provided to the students free of cost which they can avail after class hours. LR User: All Learning resources Utility Services (LR User) like LCD Projector, Overhead Projectors, Multimedia, Television, CD Player, Cassette Player etc., are in-housed. Theses facilities are made use of as teaching / learning aids. Students can access them whenever needed. There is a good collection of video cassettes acquired from AIMA, IGNOU etc. Seminar Cell: There are two well furnished Seminar Halls with adequate audio and display facilities for conducting Seminars, Workshops, Conferences etc., for enhancement of knowledge of the students. The Curricula Development Cell of the College is an exclusive feature. It takes care of the needs of students in their academic pursuits. In particular, this Cell supplies to the students supporting Study Materials for all their subjects of study in each semester free of cost. This Cell is also arranging Bridge Courses whenever there is a need to help students not having adequate basic knowledge to pursue a totally new programme unrelated to their previous study. As a value Added Programme, several subjects, which are not part of the curriculum, are taught to the UG students every semester. These include, Hindi for oral Communication, Accounting with Tally, Consumerism, Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics, Ethics in Marketing, Hardware Servicing, Internet Concepts, Nutrition, Dietetics etc., Placement Cells: The Placement Cells at the College and department levels help the students in choosing the best and fitting jobs as per their qualification. All through these years number of students have secured good jobs in reputed organizations through the efforts of these Placement Cells. The Placement Cell of the Department of Catering Science & Hotel Management has gained the unique distinction of 100% placement record year after year. The other Departments of Studies are also endeavouring to achieve a similar distinction. Institutional Membership: The institution is a member of All India management Association and Coimbatore Management Association and is on enrollment with many professional bodies in its endeavours to update the teaching-learning process. Co-Curricular and Extra- Curricular activities: Several Associations, Mandrams and Clubs at the department level and College level are functioning to bring out the latent abilities and sills of the students. They offer platforms to them to present and sharpen their talents, besides improving their competitive and leadership qualities, interpersonal and communication skills. Though these activities the students are moulded to fit into the changing business environment. Value Education: Students are regularly offered programmes in the form of lectures/ discussion to inculcate moral and ethical values in their mind. Besides, they are given opportunities to access to the community development programmes to enhance their social values. Sports and Games: Spacious Grounds for sports and games are available within the campus. Facilities are also provided for indoor games like table tennis, shuttle cock etc. There is also a well equipped Gymnasium for those who want to develop their muscle power through rigorous workout. Hostels: Hostel facilities with vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods are provided separately for gents and ladies within the College campus at nominal rates. Facilities for entertainment and recreation are also provided. The College also offers excellent canteen services. Discipline: Our College is having a strong belief that Character is life and therefore during the learning process, besides academic knowledge, much emphasis is given to student’s discipline. Discipline of highest order is maintained in the campus. University Examination Results: The academic performance at all levels has been consistent and every year the students are securing a number of University ranks. Eight ranks during 2000-2001, seven ranks during 2001-2002, ten ranks during 2002-2003, six ranks during 2003-2004 and 21 ranks during 2004-2005 were secured. These apart, the institution secured 100% result in 145 subjects and in 107 other subjects the pass percentage was more than 90%. Scholarships for Outstanding Students: Up to 25% fee concession will be given for the outstanding sports personalities and academic performers at H. Sc. Level. V.L.B.
