The Research Analyst Examination is for any person who is responsible for preparing research reports concerning equity securities. It is also required for those whose name will appear on the reports. Obtaining study materials along with securities training is highly recommended before taking the exam.

Using the appropriate study guides and preparation guides will assist applicants to pass the exam. The exam is in two parts: Part One (also known as Series 86) consists of 100 questions that test the applicant's knowledge of fundamental techniques in analysis. Part Two (Series 87) is based on regulatory administration as well as best practices. It contains 50 questions. Course materials for exam should be obtained as soon as possible to allow for adequate study time before the exam. Course books and CDs can be found online.

Those candidates who are taking the exam are allowed 4 hours to complete the first part and are allowed 90 minutes to complete the second part. Both parts of the exam may be taken on the same day if desired.

Study guides, training courses, and preparation guides are essential in that multiple forms of the exam will be given. In order to have the most well-rounded knowledge base candidates should seriously consider using up-to-date course books and CDs as preparation tools.

Candidates should understand that the passing score will change from one exam to the next but will be given their overall rating at the end of the exam.

To be eligible to take the tests, all candidates must be under the supervision of a research principal who has passed the Series 24 (General Securities Principal) exam as well as have passed either the Series 16 (NYSE Supervisory Analyst Exam) or passed Part Two of the Research Series 87 (Analyst Exam-Regulation).

While obtaining study guides or looking into training courses, candidates should know that any research analyst who has already passed the CFA Level One and Level Two exams may request an exemption from the Part One section of the Series 86 exam.

In order to meet the rules for this exemption, the candidate is required to have passed Levels I and II of the CFA examination. In addition, he or she must either have either functioned continuously as a research analyst since having passed Level II of the CFA examination or he or she must have passed Level II of the CFA examination within two years of application for registration as a research analyst.
