The J N Tata Endowment Scholarship is a merit-based loan scholarship that supports Indian students pursuing postgraduate, doctoral, or postdoctoral studies abroad. Established in 1892 by Jamsetji Nusserwanjee Tata, it is one of India’s oldest and most respected education funding programs.

Selected scholars may receive a **loan scholarship up to ₹20 lakhs**, depending on individual merit and requirements. Additional **travel grants or gift awards** may be offered through allied Tata Trusts.
It is primarily a **loan scholarship** offered at a **low simple interest rate of 2% per annum**. In some cases, partial or full interest waivers may be granted.
Repayment typically begins after the completion of studies and is made in **annual installments between the 3rd and 7th year** after disbursement.
No collateral is required. However, applicants must provide a **financial guarantor**, which is mandatory for loan approval.
At the time of application, candidates must submit:
* A **Statement of Purpose (SoP)**
* **One Letter of Recommendation (LoR)** submitted online by the referee
Additional documents may be requested if the applicant is shortlisted.
The selection process includes:
1. Online application screening
2. Aptitude or subject-based assessment
3. Personal interview with experts
4. Final selection by the Trustees
Interviews are usually conducted between **April and June**, and final results are generally announced by **July**.
Applicants pursuing **undergraduate studies**, **online or distance education**, or **short-term training programs** abroad are not eligible.
