About The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2020

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) is the world’s oldest international schools’ writing competition and has been run by The Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883. This highly regarded, pan-Commonwealth literacy programme is a unique opportunity for aspiring young writers to share their story and have their say on global issues, all whilst developing key skills.

The 2020 Competition was launched in Christchurch, New Zealand by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall on the theme of ‘Climate Action and the Commonwealth’, drawing on the increasing youth movement across the Commonwealth and the ongoing climate crisis. Young people are called upon to consider their position and power in bringing about change, and how the Commonwealth can be used as a tool for positive action. Each year, young writers who take part show their ability to stimulate and provoke discussions about important issues such as peace-building, sustainable development, gender inequality and universal education.

Past winners have gone on to be leaders in their fields, including the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong; Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Mei Fong; and renowned author, Elspeth Huxley CBE.

The QCEC is an opportunity for all young Commonwealth citizens and residents, regardless of region, education or background, to share ideas, celebrate their story and have their voice heard – all whilst developing key skills. For 2020, we want to hear from more young people across the Commonwealth, all stories and voices are important.

The competition is open to all citizens and residents of the Commonwealth aged 18 and under and runs until 30 June 2020.

All entrants receive a Certificate of Participation and one Winner and Runner-up from the Senior and Junior categories will win a trip to London for a week of educational and cultural events.
