The word ‘chromo’ is derived from Greek, which means ‘color’ . The word ‘therapy’ means ‘curative treatment’. The term chromotherapy literally means curative treatment by means ofcolours. Chromotherapy is also known as chromopathy is also known as chromopathy, colour therapy, light therapy, Heliotherapy or colourology.
Chromotherapy or colour therapy is one of the alternative systems of medicine based on seven colours ( Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red, abbreviated as VIBGYOR) of the solar spetrum or colour spectrum.It is a method of treatment of diseases / disorders using colours. According to this system, the cause of any disease / disorder could be traced to the lack of a particular colour in human system and the imbalance could be restored by means of applying colour.
Colour therapy is best used as a supportive therapy along with other natural methods such as proper diet, adequate rest and relaxation, exercise, yogic asanas and so on. It is often combined with hydrotherapy and aromatherapy.
Those who practice colour therapy often relate the seven colours of the colour spectrum to seven specific areas of the human body known as the chakras. The chakras are believed as the specific spiritual energy centres of the body. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for ‘wheel’ Each of the seven colours of the spectrum and its associated specific healing properties or therapeutic effects and the corresponding chakra in the body (with its positions) are discussed hereunder in brief.
In colour therapy, violet colour is associated with one of the seven chakras located at the top portion of the head. Violet is considered as the colour of emotions and meditative ( thoughtfulness). It promotes enlightenment. Colour therapists use violet to soothe (calm/ease) organs, to relax muscles, and to claim the nervous system. A person with an excess of Violet colour will express fanaticism and domination.
The colour Indigo is linked with one of the chakras seated at the lower part of the forehead. Indigo is believed to have cooling and calming effects. It is applied in health treatment for eyes, ears and nose and mental problems. It is also used to treat addiction. A person with an excess of the colour Indigo will experience corruption, pride and arrogance.
Blue colour is connected with one of the chakras positioned in the throat region. Blue is the colour of peace and infinity. it promotes communication and knowledge. The colour blue is said to have a very positive effect on all kinds of pain conditions. it eliminates toxins, and is used to treat liver disorders and jaundice. Excess of Blue colour in a person will bring about doubt, distrust, apathy, and melancholy.
Green colour is coupled with one of the chakras situated near the heart region. Since it is located in the middle of the colour spectrum, green colour is associated with a harmorizing (balance) effect. Colour therapists use this colour to treat bronchitis, whooping cough, inflammations of thejoints and swellings. A person with an excess of green colour will experience lethargy, lack of motivation, insecurity and jealousy
Yellow colour is concerned with one of the chakras sited at the solar plexus region. Yellow is the brightest of the colours that are commonly used in colour therapy. It balances he adrenal glands, heals skin troubles, and hels diabetes. it also purifies blood, helps digestion, and has a cleansing effect. A person with an excess of yellow colour will express lack of concentraion, malice and deviousness.
Orange colour is pertaining to one of the chakras spotted near the pelvis / groin area. Orange symbolizes the rising Sun. Orange being a mixture of red and yellow, according to chromotherapists orange stands for kind-heartedness and warm-heartedness of an individual. It is beneficial in the treatment of kidney and gallstones, hernia and appendicitis. A person with an excess of orange colour will express confusion, tiredness and pessimism.
Red colour is related to one of the seven chakras placed at the basal region of the spine. Red colour is symbolic of heat, fire and anger. It is a stimulating and energizing colour. Red has also been called the low blood pressure, rheumatism, paralysis, anaemia and tuberculosis. A person with an excess of red colour could express domination, physical cruelty, anger and vulgarity.
To become a chromotherapist or a colour therapy practitioner, an aspirant should take a course in chromotherapy, either a diploma course ( D.G.T.C.T – Diploma in Gem-Tele-Chromo Theropy, six months or one year course ) or a Bachelor Certification course ( B.G.T.C.T – Bachelor in Gem-Tele-Chromo Therapy , a two year course) in alternative systems of medicine. Minimum eligibility to study these courses can be studied either by regular classes or through correspondence courses. Presently, thenumber of institutions offering these courses is very limited in India. However, the two major institutions, which offer Diploma / Bachelor Cetification courses in chromotherapy is given below.
