Additive manufacturing (AM) is a very suitable technique for the fabrication of complicated structures and intricate geometries. Since AM can bring down cost, time and energy for making desired components, it does find importance in most of the manufacturing industries. The AM process, however, meets a number of challenges which impedes the acceptance of the process as a major manufacturing technique. In the AM products, porosity, internal cracks, surface defects, chemical inhomogeneity, non-equilibrium phases are very common and could result in material failure during service. Most of the problems have their origin in metallurgical factors during the process. Some of these critical issues will be highlighted in the seminar with recommendation of optimal solutions
