The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is an autonomous statutory organization functioning within the Institute of Technology Act. All the IITs are administered centrally by the IIT Council, an apex body established by the Government of India. The Minister of Human Resource & Development, Government of India, is the Chairman of the Council. Each Institute has a Board of Governors responsible for its overall administration and control.
The Senate comprising all professors of the Institute decides the academic policy of the Institute. It controls and approves the curriculum, courses, examinations and results. It appoints committees to look into specific academic matters arising from time to time. The teaching, training and research activities of various departments of the Institute are periodically reviewed to improve facilities and maintain standards. The Director of the Institute is the ex-officio Chairman of the Senate.
Candidates who have completed their U.G/P.G degree can apply now against “Anytime Admission Mode” for admission to M.S/Ph.D/Direct admission to M.S+Ph.D programme throughout the year.
Students who are in their final semester/year of their U.G/P.G degree may apply against “Anytime Admission Mode” to M.S / Ph.D / Direct admission to M.S+Ph.D programme.

For candidates applying under various categories of Research admission which requires sufficient work experience, the experience will be reckoned based on the date of submission of application through Anytime Admission Mode. The work experience acquired after completion of the qualifying degree (i.e. U.G/P.G degree as per eligibility criteria) will only be considered as valid.
Applications are invited at any time from eligible candidates for admission to Ph.D. and M.S. (by Research) programmes under regular/part-time/external schemes of IIT Madras. Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by MHRD as well as fellowships from other funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, DST, ICMR, AICTE etc. are available for those who have qualified for these schemes. Shortlisted candidates will be called for “test and interview” or “interview” by the Selection Committees of the respective departments from time to time. Candidates with B.E / B.Tech / B.S (4 year) can apply to pursue Direct Admission to M.S.+Ph.D in Engineering/Sciences after their Bachelor’s Degree. Meritorious M.S scholars with CGPA>8.0 are eligible to upgrade to the Ph.D. programme in the same department and will receive two degrees (M.S.+Ph.D.) on completion of the programme.
