Workshop on Advances in Tunnel Engineering at IIT Jammu

About the Institute

IIT Jammu started has its journey in the year 2016 at a Temporary campus in Paloura, Jammu and has later moved to the Transit campus which is located on the main campus site in Jagti, Jammu. The initial ntake of students in the first year was 90 in Computers, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In 2017, the Civil Engineering discipline was also started with an intake of 30 students. Now the institute offers Bachelor’s degree in six disciplines with a total intake of 180 students, in addition to several Master’s and PhD courses.

About the Department

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the finest departments in the Institute. The Department has the vision to be the best in the country and is rapidly growing by building several state-of-the-art laboratories and starting new courses. The Department has highly educated and well experienced faculty members who endeavor to produce the brightest engineers, contributing to the growth & prosperity of the nation. There are a total of 12 faculty members in all the major specializations like Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resource Engineering and Environmental Engineering. In addition to the Bachelor’s degree, the department presently offers PhD course. The department is set to start a Master’s program in Tunnel Engineering from August 2020, which will be one of its kind in the country.

Course Objectives

Considering the increasing trend of construction of tunnels for roadways and railways, metros and hydro-projects, continuous refinement of knowledge with advances in tunnel technology is necessary.Tectonically active Himalayan region poses difficult tunnelling problems due to high in situ stresses, mélange soil profile etc. Similarly, large amount of excavation works need to be carried out in a precise manner to prevent any damage to surrounding rock mass and structures. IIT Jammu is situated in a prime location where lot of tunnelling activity takes place. To cater the country’s need in the area of tunnel engineering including the necessary courses to educate students, carryout advanced research
and knowledge distribution, a Center for Tunnel Research is planned to be opened on campus.As a precursor, a workshop is planned to get all the experts under one roof to educate the audience with the state-ofthe-art tunnelling technology and to form a common platform for discussion. The workshop has been intended to disseminate the knowledge related to tunnelling by the experts from different academic institutes and industry for maximum benefit of the participants. Eligibility of Participants To make the workshop successful, IIT Jammu would like to invite students, engineers, geologists, researchers, scientists, academicians involved with the investigation, design and construction of tunnels and underground works For those who are willing to attend shall fill the registration form and pay the registration fee accordingly.
