Admission to Higher Degree and Ph. D Programmes for I Semester 2008-2009
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani is an institution declared as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Applications are invited for admission to the following higher degree and Ph. D programmes offered by the Institute. Admissions will be made on All-India basis strictly according to merit and suitability of the candidate to pursue the following programmes of studies.
A. Higher Degree Programmes:
1. Programmes Offered:
(i) At BITS Pilani Pilani Campus:
(a) M.E. Biotechnology, Chemical*, Civil (with specialization in Structural Engineering/ Transportation Engineering/ Infrastructure systems), Communication Engineering, Microelectronics, Electrical (with specialization in Power Electronics & Drives), Embedded Systems, Mechanical, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Design Engineering, Computer Science, Software Systems.
(b) M. Pharm
(c) Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Engineering & Technology Management, IT Enabled Services Management.
(d) Master of Public Health (MPH)
* Chemical with specialization in Petroleum Engineering is also being planned.
(ii) At BITS Pilani Goa Campus:
M.E. Biotechnology, Design Engineering
Duration: Normally Four Semesters
Eligibility: A minimum of 60% aggregate in the qualifying examination.
2. Input Qualification:
a) ME Biotechnology Any integrated first degree of BITS or its equivalent with adequate preparation in Biochemistry and Microbiology.
b) ME Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Mechanical Integrated first degree of BITS in the respective discipline or its equivalent.
c) ME Communication Engineering, Electrical with specialization in Power Electronics & Drives Integrated first degree of BITS in Electrical & Electronics/ Electronics & Instrumentation or its equivalent.
d) ME Design Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering Integrated first degree of BITS in Mechanical or its equivalent or M. Sc (Tech) Engineering Technology of BITS or its equivalent with the requirement of taking certain additional courses.
e) ME Embedded Systems Integrated first degree of BITS in Electrical & Electronics/ Electronics & Instrumentation/ Computer Science/ Physics or its equivalent.
f) ME Microelectronics Integrated first degree of BITS in Electrical & Electronics/ Electronics & Instrumentation/ Computer Science or its equivalent.
g) ME Software Systems Any Integrated first degree of BITS or its equivalent with specific prior preparation.
h) M. Pharm Integrated first degree of BITS in Pharmacy or its equivalent.
i) MBA Any Integrated first degree of BITS or BE/ B. Tech degree in engineering disciplines from any other recognized University.
j) MPH Any Integrated first degree of BITS or its equivalent, MBBS, BDS, M. Sc (Nursing) or their equivalent.
B. Doctoral Programmes Leading to Ph. D in All Disciplines:
Input Qualification:
Any Higher Degree of BITS or its equivalent. Any applicant with qualification equivalent to integrated first degree of BITS will be first examined for suitability to one of the higher degree programmes of the institute.
Employed professionals working in industries and R&D organizations and having long experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph. D programme will be considered under the Ph. D Aspirants scheme and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own locations of work. Candidates holding any of the BITS degree or working in an organization collaborating with BITS will normally be considered under this scheme.
Note:
(i) Admissions to all Higher degree Programmes except MPH are based on the performance of the candidates in the computer based online test conducted by BITS followed by interviews of short listed candidates. The tests are planned to be conducted at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi (Noida), Hyderabad, Kolkata, Nagpur, Pilani & Goa subject to a certain minimum number of candidates opting for each center. The tests will have objective type questions (multiple choice) only and will be conducted during 21st 22nd June, 2008. Based on test performance candidates will be short-listed and asked to come to Pilani/ Goa for interviews at their own cost. The final selection is based on the performance in the tests and interviews. The details of online test and syllabus for the test are available at the BITS website, http://www.bitsadmission.com/.
(ii) For MBA programme, short listed candidates called for interviews at Pilani will also have to appear for a test in Reading Comprehension and a Group Discussion.
(iii) Admissions to MPH are based on the performance of the candidates in a written test, followed by Group Discussion and interviews, which will be conducted in Pilani on 26th July, 2008.
(iv) For the Ph. D programme short listed candidates will be asked to come to Pilani for interview at their own cost.
(v) Assistantships for Teaching Career: Applications for admission to the higher degree and Ph. D programmes will also be considered for financial assistance in the form of Teaching/ Project/ Research Assistantships. Such selected candidates will be required to participate in teaching and other developmental programme of the Institute under the guidance of a mentor. Assistantships with full fee waiver will be provided to such candidates.
C. Application Procedure:
Interested and eligible candidates should apply through the prescribed application form available online at http://www.bitsadmission.com/ and take the printout of the filled form. The completed application form along with the prescribed fee in the form of a crossed Demand Draft should be sent to Admissions Officer, BITS, Pilani 333 031. Demand Draft should be drawn in favour of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani payable at State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, Pilani (Code: 10398) or UCO Bank, Vidya Vihar, Pilani (Code: 0150).
Application Fee: Rs.1000/- for Higher degree programmes and Rs.800/- for Ph. D programmes.
Deadline for submission of the completed application form is 30th May, 2008, 5.00 PM.
