PhD Admissions in ARIES, 2020

Students with M.Sc Physics are invited to apply for Junior Fellowship programme of ARIES leading to PhD. Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme are initially offered a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The JRF joins the PhD programme after successful completion of the course work. On completion of two years as a Junior Research Fellow, a student is offered a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) after an assessment. The total tenure of the fellowship may not ordinarily exceed five years, inclusive of the course work. Once a student submits the thesis within five years, an enhanced fellowship amount may be given for a further period of one year. Shortlisted candidates names will be posted on ARIES website. The first level interview will be conducted through video conferencing. The second and final level interview may take place at ARIES, Nainital depending on the normalization of situation in the wake of pandemic COVID 19. The starting date of the PhD program this year may be delayed.

Fellowship: Rs 31000/- per month (JRF); Rs 35000/- per month (SRF)

Minimum qualification for PhD interviews at ARIES:

1. M. Sc. Physics with minimum 55% marks for General/OBC and 50% for SC/ST. Post graduation degree should be from an UGC recognized college/University.

1. The candidate should have passed M. Sc. on or after 2018. Students who are appearing in M. Sc. final year exam can appear before the interview, but, if selected have to furnish the proof of M. Sc. qualification at the time of joining.

1. Age limit: 28 years as on July 1, 2020 (date of birth on or after July 1, 1992). Upper age limit for reserved categories may be relaxed as per the UGC rules.

1. Applicants should have qualified JEST-2020 in Physics -OR- CSIR/UGC-NET (JRF/LS) qualified in Physics/Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Science (2018/19) -OR- GATE – 2019/GATE -2020 qualified in Physics/Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences -OR- having INSPIRE fellowship.

1. All the applications will be further screened by taking into account marks/ranks in JEST/GATE/CSIR,UGC-NET and M.Sc. and other guidelines decided by ARIES. Fulfilling minimum qualification does not guarantee a call for the interview.

Candidates with external fellowships (CSIR-JRF, DST Inspire) may be given preference.

Online application is mandatory for the PhD applicants. Online application portal will become online after 1200 Hrs on 15 May, 2020. Deadline for application is 1200 Hrs on 19 June, 2020 (revised).

Kathgodam (~35 km from Nainital) and Lal Kuan (~55 km from Nainital) are the nearest railway stations for Nainital.

Road

Nainital is connected by road to major centers of northern India, some of the major road distances are: Agra – 379 km. , Delhi – 277 km. and Bareilly – 141 km.

Tip for using taxi from Kathgodam-ARIES:

Once you reach at Kathgodam railways station, you can also take taxi to ARIES, which taxi drivers usually know as Observatory. For ARIES, there is bifurcation road on Kathgodam-Nainital high way, 6 km before reaching Nainital. The bifurcation road is about 3km, because of which, some time taxi driver charge Rs 25-50 extra for Kathgodam-ARIES as compare to Kathgodam-Nainital. The typical share basis taxi fair may be around Rs 100-150 per seat, and full taxi may cost around Rs 500-700 (also highly vary depending on the number of tourist visiting Nainital).

ARIES Bus

Institute bus service is also available from Nainital bus stand to ARIES, the bus timings are 8.30 AM, 9.40 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM (last) and similarely from ARIES to Nainital at 9.00AM, 11:30AM, 2:00PM, 3:30PM and 5:30Pm (last).
