About The NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Awards 2022

The Scopus Young Scientist Awards, first launched by Elsevier in 2006, is part of an Elsevier’s global initiative to support early career researchers in their quest to advance the frontiers of science across a broad range of disciplines. In 2009, India officially adopted the program within its scientific community through Elsevier’s collaboration with The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). The program honours outstanding young researchers in India who are building their careers in academic research, helping them gain recognition for their work. As of 2022, 100+ winners have been announced.

 

The NASI Scopus Young Scientist of the year receives:

 

* A citation & a plaque
* Prize of INR 75,000

 

The 14th NASI Scopus Young Scientist Awards has 5 multi-disciplinary categories –

 

WOMEN IN SCIENCE – To recognize India’s most promising woman researchers who have demonstrated excellence in scientific field with possibility of societal impacts. Female applications only.

 

AGRICULTURE, PLANT SCIENCES AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT – To recognize India’s most promising researchers who are working in the field of AGRICULTURE and are committed to developing sustainable models that help in increasing food security and improving the quality of life of people living in rural areas.

 

ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – To recognise India’s most promising researchers who are working in the field of EARTH, ENVIRONMENTAL, OCEANOGRAPHIC, and ECOLOGICAL STUDIES, SOCIAL SCIENCES and ECOSYSTEM and are contributing to protecting our planet and conserving its natural resources.

 

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND HEALTHCARE – To recognize India’s most promising researchers who are working in the field of MEDICINE AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES and are making ground-breaking contributions toward improving health and wellbeing of citizens.

 

INNOVATION IN ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES – To recognize India’s most promising researchers who are working in the field of ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY and are harnessing it to drive disruptive and sustainable growth, with a potential for high industrial and/or societal impact.

 

Research metrics for each category:

 

* Quality and number of publications
* Nature and uniqueness of research
* Outcomes of research
* Impact on society
* Vision of the researcher

 

If your research (both basic and applied) is empowering or can be a helpful technological tool for the above-mentioned categories, do not forget to mention it in your application as it can give your application an additional weightage.

 

Application Process

 

NASI-Scopus Awards will be determined on quantitative as well as qualitative evaluation and hence application process plays an instrumental role in ensuring qualitative, expert assessment and allows those evaluated to verify data and analysis. This process of reflection is powerful and transformative because we are not just considering the journal-based metrics for evaluation but the holistic impact and scope of applicants’ research.

 

Your application for any award category must comprise:

 

* Personal statement(s) that complement and build on the picture that is evident from the Research Metrics associated with any category. They should tell the story that would otherwise remain untold. Applicants may use any means to share their statement, such as a document (up to 500 words) or a film (up to 5 mins). The statement must reflect the impact of your research on the society and the vision of the researcher and will play an instrumental role in the selection of the winner.

 

* Basic information that would include your full name, most recent affiliation, number of publications, number of publications where the applicant is first and last author, year of first publication, and subject area focus (the most frequent three).

 

* Your Scopus ID and ORCID, a feature that has been incorporated to make it convenient for applicants since the ID will help auto-populate the applicant’s details.

 

Eligibility Criteria

 

* An Indian citizen, residing and working in India.
* Has completed at least PhD/MD or equivalent degree.
* Must be born on or after January 1st, 1977.
* Each male applicant must apply only under one category. A female applicant can apply under ‘Women in Science’ and an additional category.
* All applicants will be expected to apply for the awards within the cut-off date.
* Activity entered for this award must have been undertaken no more than five (5) years prior to the closing date of entries published in one or more respected, externally refereed scientific journal(s), book(s) or equivalent electronic publication(s) and the publication must be indexed in Scopus.

 

Note: The last date for the submission of applications shall be September 23, 2022.
