Our essay contest provides an avenue for high school students to explore these important challenges, and strive for novel answers. More than ever, the world needs thoughtful, critical thinkers. But, more than this, we want to create a genuine sense of compassion and hope for what humanity might be able to achieve.

Our mission is to empower the next generation, through fostering relentless inquiry and uncompromising originality, to shape the vast number of future generations to come.

We live at a pivotal moment in history. Society must grapple with urgent challenges and the promise and peril of today’s rapid development of transformative technologies. Our choices now will shape humanity’s long-term future.

It is in this context that Pivotal, in partnership with the Global Priorities Institute at Oxford University, is proud to announce a global essay contest focused on the world’s most pressing problems.

With $25,000 in prizes, a panel of world-class judges, and no entry fee, this contest provides an unparalleled opportunity for young minds to engage with critical global issues. To aid in their exploration, participants may also request a free copy of William MacAskill’s “What We Owe The Future,” a seminal work that dives into our responsibilities to future generations.

Eligibility: Open to all high schoolers aged 13-19

Entry Requirements

Who?

Anyone, anywhere in the world in high school or equivalent (secondary school, etc.)

What?

You should write an essay between 1000 and 2000 words. We are less concerned about the length so much as the depth and originality of the content.

When is the deadline?

All entries must be submitted before 11:59 PM in your local timezone on October 17, 2023.
