About The International Finsa Award for Architects & Designers

THE AWARD: The International Finsa Award for Architects & Designers 2019 aims to encourage and challenge students to explore and redesign the use of wood and other ecological and recyclable materials in construction. We believe that the future in construction should continue developing this way and know it is possible to achieve. The award considers the work of both teachers and students or short term graduates, all of whom will be acknowledged and awarded.

2019 EDITION: Woodside Pavilion is a temporary structure designed to house practical art activities for the local community. Conceived as an informal, pop-up space, the purpose of the pavilion is to engage and offer dialogue and collaboration between groups of people who do not normally have the opportunity to meet with or collaborate with practical artists.

THE PRIZE: The International Finsa Award prize for the 2019 edition goes further. We want to add value to the competition by building the winner(s) project. Plus, the supervision and management of the construction by the designers. This will kickstart their careers considering that the competition is only for students or recent graduates (check the Competition Guidelines for more information about elegibility).

Woodside Pavilion is a temporary structure designed to house practical art activities for the local community. Conceived as an informal, pop-up space, the purpose of the pavilion is to engage and offer dialogue and collaboration between groups of people who do not normally have the opportunity to meet with or collaborate with practical artists. Coinciding with the Imagine Wirral year of Culture next year, the pavilion will host between 2 and 3 weeks of programming run by artists from the local community, designed for children, teenagers and adults. Beyond offering a space to host workshops, talks and events, the aim of the project is to bring the local community together through architecture and design.

Project description

The aim of the project is to reflect on the local context, collaborate with community groups active in the area and serve as a platform to support diverse voices and audiences and inviting a plurality of voices and narratives to lead arts initiatives and activities.

It should reflect the historical and geographical context of the pavilion, with the rich history of the Woodside that carries important meaning for the local community, while considering the possibility of a flexible or modular design that can be taken down easily and transported to other locations across to borough, where it will be used for other programming and create a sense of continuity for the community.

The building materials for the pavilion will be provided in-kind by Finsa. While a small budget has been set aside to purchase additional materials, it would be preferable for design proposals to consider using solely Finsa’s material.
