About World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Video Competition

The 23rd session of the General Assembly will feature the 4th edition of the UNWTO Tourism Video Competition.

The importance of multimedia for tourism communications cannot be underestimated. This is especially true against the backdrop of ever-growing digitalization, changing viewer and user habits and the consolidation of mobile-first strategies.

UNWTO Video Competition Guidelines

General information

The Video Competition for the 23rd General Assembly will feature two categories:

1. “Outstanding Country Promotional Videos”, paying tribute to the importance of multimedia for marketing tourism destinations.

2. “Exceptional Stories of Sustainable Tourism”. This category aims at underscoring tourism’s contribution to sustainable development, in line with UNWTO’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, sustainability has proven to be increasingly useful for making
campaigns and tourism initiatives more visible and engaging. It also helps raise awareness of the tourism’s cultural, environmental and economic benefits.

Who can take part?

Videos published between 1 January 2018 and 31 July 2019 may be considered for the Competition.

* Member States are encouraged to submit videos for both categories, thereby contributing to further positioning tourism as a key sector for the economy, business opportunities, jobs and overall sustainable development.

* Affiliate Members are encouraged to submit videos for the new “Exceptional Stories of Sustainable Tourism” category.

The winners will be announced during the 23rd session of the UNWTO General Assembly.

Tips for content – 3 rules of engagement

* Capture attention immediately: in times of over-stimulation, viewers are increasingly selective about where and how they focus their attention. Make sure that the beginning of any visual piece is engaging enough to keep viewers watching.

* Be truly helpful: Always try to think “user centered”- What are they interested in as opposed to what you want to promote? Provide the answers before the questions are asked. Finding the middle way will help you in selecting the best visual product.

* Encourage action: Foster a sense of urgency, promote a need to visit/experience/engage/care with a destination.

Deadline for submissions is Friday 2 August 2019
