About the Rajiv Gandhi Institute

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Jais is an autonomous institution established by the Government of India. The Institute has been accorded the status of ‘An Institution of National Importance’ along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) under an Act of Parliament (RGIPT Act 2007).

The Institute also has a fully established Postgraduate centre at Bengaluru. It is a domain-specific Institute and its prime objective is to provide world-class education, training, and research to roll out efficient human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum and Energy sector. The aspiration is to develop India as a global manpower hub for the entire Petroleum and Energy Sector.

The university is inviting applications for admission to M. Tech and Ph.D programmes in the odd (July-2020) semester of Academic Session 2020-2021 in various disciplines.

1. M Tech Programmes

1. A Full-Time Regular Registration Category

Applicants must have the requisite qualification for admission to postgraduate programmes. The applicant must have qualified the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)* with validity not expired.

*Provision for admission of non-GATE candidates into the M Tech programmes exists at Banglore Energy Institute, Bengaluru Postgraduate centre subject to qualifying a written test followed by Interview.

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance in the form of Institute Assistantships is available to the students admitted to M Tech programme under Full-Time regular registration category. Presently the Assistantships @ Rs 12,400/- per month (for GATE qualified) is available. The non-GATE candidates, if admitted in the M Tech programmes at the Bengaluru PG centre will be provided with an Institute Assistantship of Rs. 8,000/- per month.

1.B Full-Time External Registration Category

A candidate working in an external R & D organization or in an industry-recognized by the Institute, which is equipped with necessary research and library facilities may be considered for admission to M Tech programmes, provided he/she satisfies the eligibility criteria. He/She must show satisfactory performance in the interview, must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least two years at the time of admission.

1.C. Full Time Sponsored Registration Category

A candidate who is sponsored by a teaching institution or by an R & D organization or by industry is eligible for admission to M Tech programmes, provided he/she satisfies the eligibility criteria. He/she must have been in service of the sponsoring institution/organization for at least two years at the time of admission.

1.D. Part-time Registration Category

The Institute offers part-time M Tech programmes for permanent staff and faculty members of the Institute as well as research assistants working in an externally funded research project running in the Institute (Remaining duration of the project must be minimum 2 years at the time of registration), provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria.

Selection Criteria

• For Full-time regular category, candidates shortlisted on the basis of GATE Score which is valid and above the qualifying pass mark, may be selected for M Tech programmes either on the basis of their GATE score or written test or interview or on the basis of any combination of these as declared by the individual department.
• The non-GATE candidates have to qualify the written test and the Interview for selection into M Tech programmes at Bengaluru PG centre.
• For admission under other categories, candidates are exempted from appearing in the written test.

2. Ph.D Programmes

2.A Full-Time Regular Registration Category

Minimum Qualification

Ph.D in Engineering

Applicants with Master’s degree in engineering in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Master’s degree level.

Applicants with Bachelor’s degree in engineering in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Bachelor’s degree level. An applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on 10 point scale) at Bachelor degree provided the degree is from an institution funded by the Central Government.

Applicants with a Master’s degree in science as an allied discipline/area (where science is an allied discipline/area), must satisfy each of the following criteria:

• A minimum of 65% marks or 6.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Master’s degree level
• A minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Bachelor’s degree level

Ph.D in Sciences

Applicants with Master’s degree in science in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Master’s degree level.

Applicants with four year Bachelor’s degree in Science in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Bachelor’s degree level. An applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on 10 point scale) at Bachelor degree provided the degree is from an institution funded by the Central Government.

Ph.D in Humanities

Applicants with Master’s degree in Engineering with a minimum CPI of 6.00 on a 10.0 point scale (or 60% marks) in the qualifying degree.

Applicants with Master’s degree in Humanities/Science or allied subjects with a minimum CPI of 6.00 on a 10.0 point scale (or 60% marks) in the qualifying degree.

Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Sciences (4-Year program) with a minimum CPI of 7.50 on a 10.0 point scale (or 75% marks) in the Bachelor degree. An applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on 10 point scale) at Bachelor degree provide the degree is from an institution funded by the Central Government.

Ph.D in Management Studies

Applicants with Master’s degree or equivalent in the management or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Master’s degree level.

Applicants with Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the Bachelor’s degree level. An applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at Bachelor degree provided the degree is from an institution funded by the Central Government.

Financial Assistance

Presently the Assistantships @ Rs. 31,000/- per month is available to full-time students admitted to the Ph D programmes.

2.B Full-Time External Registration category

A candidate working in an external R & D organization or in an industry-recognized by the Institute, which is equipped with necessary research and library facilities can also apply for admission to Ph.D programmes.

2.C Full Time Sponsored Registration Category

A candidate who is sponsored by a teaching institution or by an R & D organization or by industry can also apply for admission to Ph.D programmes.

2.D Part-time Registration Category

The Institute offers part-time Ph D programmes for permanent staff and faculty members of the Institute as well as research assistants/JRFs/SRFs working in an externally funded research project running in the Institute.

Selection Criteria

Admission will be based on written test and interview of the candidates shortlisted by the Department concerned.
