National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur was established as Regional Institute of Technology in 1960. Later, in December 2002 it was upgraded to National Institute of Technology with the status of Autonomous Institute under the aegis of Institute of National Importance, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India, New Delhi (by an Act of Parliament namely, the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007).
In the backdrop of forest-covered low hill beneath which the flowing river Kharkai makes the Institute a suitable place for overall development of the students. The institute consists of 12 departments and offers B.Tech., M.Sc., M.C.A., M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities. The institute has highly qualified 140 faculty members, 100 dedicated nonteaching staffs and 4000 students.
The Department of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Institute of Technology) Jamshedpur was started with the inception of the institute itself in 1960.
The Department not only runs M.Sc., M. Tech. (Surface Science and Engineering) and Ph.D. programs but also teaches Chemistry subject as one of the papers for all engineering branches. The department has 9 young and well qualified faculty members who are involved in teaching and research.
Apart from teaching and research, faculty members of the department are actively involved in administration, training and other extracurricular activities for all round development of the Institute, in general, and the department in particular.

-Bridging researchers across the country to a single platform to exchange scientific ideas and knowledge.
