Trichology is the scientific study of hair and scalp disorders which included hair thinning, male and female pattern baldness, seborrhea dermatitis, scalp eczema & psoriasis, scalp itching, premature graying, head lice, hair breakage & damage. It is derived form the Greek word ?Tricho? meaning ?hair?. It is a disciplined area of study that began in London, England in 1902. Trichology deals with hair, its anatomy, growth and diseases and thus involves in-depth study of chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology. With the popularization of paramedical sciences, this field has gained much importance in the recent years.
Hair, as tissue of excretion, is a perfect gauge for physical conditions and acts as a barometer for the body systems. The importance of hair in one?s life can be realized by the fact that cause of death of a person can be diagnosed by the analysis of a single hair. In order to be an expert in the area of trichology, knowledge must be gained in the areas of the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and prognosis of specific hair and scalp disorders. Also, a trichologist should be able to recognize certain systemic condition s which are otherwise treated by other medical practitioners.
The International Association of Trichologists (I.A.T), Australia, is a leading organization in the field of trichology with worldwide society of over 400 certufued trichologists. In India, this field gained recognition in 1986 with the establishment of ?Richfeel Trichology Centre? founded by Dr. Apoorva Shaw & Dr.Sonal Shaw, India?s first certified tricchologists. In the words of Dr. Apoorva Shaw, ?Trichology offers tremendous scope for growth in India, as the application and use of trichology is much more than just cosmetic?. Recently, MET-Richfeel Institute of Trichology has been launched to impart the science of Trichology and create career opportunities for a Trichologist. The Institute is a tripartite association between Mumbai Educational Trust, Richfeel / Trichology Centre and International Association of Trichologist (I.A.T), Australia.
As a first step, trichologist thoroughly consult the client questioning about his health, diet, family history, hair care, etc. a trichologist works in close association with dermatologists, endocrinologists, dentists, nutritionists, psychiatrists and cosmetologists.
Though persons working in this area at present are few, but there is and increasing potential for employment growth. After having super specialization in the field of hair and scalp, one can practice as a super specialist doctor. A trichologist can also offer consultancy to beauty saloons & multinational companies. A person with knowledge of trichology can also work as a clinical researcher for hair & scalp, or as an expert witness in the court of law. Self employment and assistance to doctors and paramedical specialists are other viable options.
Both diploma and degree courses are available in this field. Diploma in trichology is of three month duration and is open to paramedics, pharma graduates, clinical researchers, nurses, R&D professionals, science graduates, beauticians and hair stylists. A six month program leading to an international degree certification in trichology can be taken by medical doctors only. These courses can be undertaken by correspondence (distance learning) through I.A.T Sydney and I.A.T Adelaide.
