REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE 4TH ANNUAL WILLEM C. VIS (EAST) INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION TO BE HELD AT HONG KONG
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is India's premier Law University, and has always endeavoured to promote opportunities for talented budding advocates to hone their skills of advocacy through exercises such as moot court competitions. Teams from NLSIU have consistently excelled in various International as well as National moot court competitions such as The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, Washington D.C., The Willem C. Vis International Arbitration Moot Court Competition, Vienna, The Stetson International Moot, Florida, the Bar Council of India Trust Moot, the Anand and Anand Moot on IPR Laws etc.
For almost a decade now, NLSIU has been participating in the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition held at Vienna. This competition is intended to stimulate the study of International Commercial Law as well as Arbitration law by leading participants from different legal systems to analyse and interpret several International Conventions in the light of emerging trends and to then argue a hypothetical case arising out a business dispute before an International Adjudicatory panel composed of judges from different legal systems. The fact of it being one of the leading international moot court competitions is reflected in the participation of 156 universities from 49 countries in the competition last year. Our students have fared well in this competition by getting Honorable mentions on numerous occasions, and by finishing as one of the top 8 teams out of 151 participating teams in 2004. Needless to say, they have also benefited from the exposure that such a competition offers.
This year, for the first time, NLSIU shall be sending a team of two students: Mr. Amarta Roy ( Contact No. +91 98868 21669 ) and Mr. Debesh Panda ( Contact No.+91 98866 97899) (Final year and 4th year, B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) respectively) to the Eastern chapter of the above competition which shall be held in Hong Kong between 19th to 25th March 2007. These students have been selected by way of merit, through a rigorous evaluation process that involves several rounds of intra-class and inter-class trials.
NLSIU, however, neither receives any recurring grant, nor makes any specific allocations for covering the enormous expenses involved in participation in an international moot court competition. The participation of teams therefore, has always been constrained by the lack of financial support to enable them to raise a basic amount to take care of their minimum requirements. However, to encourage participation in such competitions, legal luminaries, industrial houses, law firms and individuals have generously supported participants in such international moots in previous years. This year?s team to Vis East requires a sum of approximately Rs.1.45 lakhs based on the following estimated breakup:
I request you to contribute towards the above amount so as to help these students to participate in the competition this year. It would be apposite to note that any contributions received by us from you shall be completely tax deductible under S.80G of the Income tax Act, 1961. In order for NLSIU to provide tax deduction certificates, contributions by Cheque may kindly be made out to: The Registrar, the National Law School of India University?. We reiterate that any assistance towards sponsorship for the team would be deeply appreciated by the University.
Thanking You, Yours Sincerely,
(A. JAYAGOVIND) Vice-Chancellor National Law School of India University
