The republic of Ireland follows the British system of education. There are Government funded, aided and private institutions for Tertiary education [third level after primary fa secondary). Ireland boasts of some of the best Universities and Colleges.

There are totally seven Universities and in that four are coming under the Umbrella of the National University of Ireland, Each University offers around 400 courses at various levels. There are also 14 institutes of technology spread out in Ireland, which have Science, Business, Computing, Engineering and even Catering and a range of other useful programs.

The Bachelor's degree is of Three years duration. The Bachelors degree (Hons) is of four years duration. The Graduate Diploma, usually for those who needs vocational reorientation and this is for One year.

The Masters is of One year to Two Vears depending on course work and research work while the PhD takes about Three years of original research work.

The academic year starts from September to |une of the next calendar year and usually consists of 2 or 3 semesters.

Various Programs Available In Ireland

Most of the Indian students proceeding to Ireland are choosing very special courses. These are either not available in many countries or not taught by the way, it is done in Ireland. The reason is the course work/research work oriented Master's degree program.

Some of the programs are : Aero space, Agriculture, Architecture, Bio-Engg, Bio-Medical, Chemical Engg. Petroleum, Civil Engg, Computer Aided Engg., Master's in Building Construction, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engg. Hydrology and more.

Admission Requirements

Since the procedure to admit international students is not standardised, individual Universities have their own yard stick. But in general, the same, British procedure is followed.

The basic secondary education of 13 years is required by some institutions. But, the Indian students are allowed after their CBSE or CISCE exams to enter the Under graduate courses. But they have to pass the IELTS or TOEFL depending on the college which offers admission. For Post Graduate education, the Degree grades, IELTS/TOEFL score and also GRE scores are required.
