Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program
The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching in the U.S. and abroad. It is part of the overall Fulbright Program, named in honor of Senator J. William Fulbright, which promotes mutual understanding among people of the United States and other countries. The program brings international teachers to the U.S. for a semester and sends U.S. teachers abroad for three to six months. For international teachers, the program is open to teachers from Botswana, Finland, India, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Palestinian Territories, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Selected international participants will be placed at a U.S. host university School of Education from mid- August to mid-December, 2016. The host university will provide a broad range of resources in the teachers? fields of expertise. International teachers who are selected to participate in the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program will 1) enroll in advanced undergraduate or graduate level classes, 2) design and conduct an inquiry project, 3) observe, team teach and/or conduct seminars or workshops for U.S. teachers and students in local schools; and 4) engage in other teaching related activities. Upon returning home, participants will be expected to integrate international best practices in education and inquiry project findings into their classrooms, school and communities. The participants will expand global and intercultural awareness of students and colleagues by sharing their Fulbright experience in India. In addition, they are expected to develop partnerships and joint projects with schools and classrooms in the U.S.
Eligibility Requirements
The applicants should:
Be a citizen of India and reside in India at the time of application. Be qualified to obtain/hold a valid Indian passport.
Hold at least a bachelor's degree. A teacher training degree is preferred.
Be full time teachers teaching any subject at any level (primary, middle or secondary).
Have at least five years of full time teaching experience.
Primary and secondary level media specialists/librarians, guidance counselors, curriculum specialists, special education coordinators, gifted and talented coordinators, and administrators who spend at least fifty percent of their time teaching or working directly with students may also apply to the program.
Teacher trainers are eligible to apply.
Demonstrate leadership and have experience leading workshops or other professional development activities for the colleagues.
Demonstrate good English language competence.
If you have taken any standard test of English language proficiency such as the TOEFL or IELTS, please attach a photocopy of the score report to your application. If you have not taken the TOEFL or IELTS and are selected as a nominee, you will be required to take the TOEFL in December 2015. USIEF will provide fee vouchers towards the TOEFL exam. The nominee should possess a paper based TOEFL score of 550 (213 Computer Based TOEFL, 79 Internet Based TOEFL) or an IELTS score of 6.5.
Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously participated in any Fulbright Teacher grant and to those who serve students in under-resourced communities or from underserved groups.
Grant Benefits
Program costs such as tuition, room and board and transportation are covered by the Fulbright grant. Participants will receive a maintenance allowance designed to assist with the costs of living during the U.S. program. Grantees will also have the opportunity to apply for professional development funds during their program to support development and research or to cover the expenses of attending a conference or workshop related to their fields of teaching expertise.
Dependents are allowed to accompany the program participants. Grantees are responsible for all costs for family members while in the U.S. and must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to support their family while in the U.S.
Inquiry Project : The inquiry project synthesizes the study, inquiry and professional development activities undertaken by Fulbright Distinguished Teachers while in the U.S. The form and content of the project is proposed by the applicant at the time of application. Projects should encourage cross-cultural dialogue, demonstrate relevance and applicability to education in India and the U.S.; and directly reflect and incorporate activities undertaken as part of the Fulbright program. Participants should be creative in developing program activities that will enhance their project and contribute to its successful completion and implementation. The host university will assign each participant a university faculty advisor who will help refine and complete the participants' project ideas. The final product(s) should be designed to benefit the students and colleagues in the participant's school and community in India.

Selection Procedure and Timeline
1. Application Deadline: October 9, 2015
2. Screening of applications: end October 2015
3. National Interviews in Delhi: mid to end November 2015
4. Notification of Finalists: March 2016
Fellows will be selected through a merit-based open competition. After the application deadline, a screening committee will review all eligible applications. Short listed candidates will be interviewed by a committee in New Delhi which will select nominees whose names will be forwarded to Washington DC for further consideration. Nominees will be required to take iBT TOEFL examination in December 2015. All nominations from the participating countries will be reviewed by independent panels of educational experts in Washington, DC. The panel will then recommend selected applications for further consideration and approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). All candidates will be notified of their status in March 2016.
