The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) invites applications for grant of Research Awards to students for pursuing studies for P.hD. degrees in Mathematics.

Eligibility: Applicants should be motivated students with a Master's degree in Mathematics scoring more than 65% of marks. Students having a Master's degree in Statistics or Physics may also apply provided they have a very good background in Mathematics as indicated by the courses taken by them as also by the testimonials submitted. Students who have appeared for Master's degree examination this year may also apply. They should have scored more than 65% marks in their previous semesters..Applicants should be below the age of 25 years as on January 1, 2004. Exceptional cases will, however, be considered on merit.

Amount of Scholarship Research awardees will be paid Rs.8000/- per month during the first two years.The Scholarship amount may be enhanced to Rs.9,000/- per month at the end of the second year after an evaluation of the progress of the awardee by the Board. A contingency grant of Rs.5,000/- per annum will be given. Selected students will enroll themselves with an appropriate institution to work/study towards a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. The Scholarships will be paid through the institution which they join. The awards are sanctioned for one year at a time and are renewable at the end of each year subject to satisfactory progress upto five years.

Selection will be made on the basis of a written tst followed by interviews to assess the aptitude of the applicants. The written test will be a multiple choice test of 90 minutes duration. The questions would be primary in the board areas of Algebra, Topology and Analysis. The mere fact that candidtes have the necessary minimum qualifications does not ensure that they will be called for the written test. The applications will be further screened as per some criteria. The Written tests will be held at 16 different Centres listed below. (1) Allahabad (2) Bhopal (3) Bhubaneswar (4) Chandigarh (5) Chennai (6) Goa (7) Vallabh Vidyanagar , Gujarat (8) Guwahati (9) Hyderabad (10) Indore (11) Jabalpur (12) Cochin (13) Kolkata (14) Mumbai (15) New Delhi (16)Pune and (17) Ranchi.

The candidates should give a choice of two Centres nearest to their address for correspondence. The choice, however, does not guarantee that the Centres will be alloted to them, though NBHM will try hard. In case NBHM is unable to offer them either of their choice of Centres, it will ry to get to the next nearest one.

Application in duplicate along with a recent passport size photograph should be made in the proforma given at the end of this advertisement and sent to the address given below. The envelope should be marked " NBHM research Awards". Though the proforma lists various items on after the other horizontally, the application should contain in these details one below the other sequentially. Candidates for Research Awards should specify on the envelope their area of interese ( pure mathematics / Applied Mathematics / Statistics / Mathematical Physics). The applicants should arrange for letters of recommendation from three experts/teacher to be sent in Sealed Envelops along with the applications. A self-addressed postcard/stamped envelope should accompany the application for acknowledgment of receipt.

The last date for the receipt of completed applications is April18,2004 Candidates called for written test/interview will be paid Railway fare limited to sleeper class (second class) each way between address for correspondance/residence and Dearness Allowance(DA) as per rules for covering living expenses for the day of test/interview.
